Things I've learned in the last few days:

1. One should not put too much energy into conference presentations. That way, when no one asks you a question and the moderator gets your thesis wrong in his wrap up, it won't matter quite so much.

2. Six hour drives are not that bad--unless you have a two-year-old, unless you're driving down a two-lane highway in the middle of nowhere-Missouri, unless the six hours turns into closer to 8, even if the two-year-old behaves like an angel.

3. Apparently kitty kibble gets stale-- or that's what the cat-sitter who replaced our bag of cat food thinks.

4. If you show a two-year-old "big boy" underwear, he will want to wear them...over his diaper...even at night.

5. I have now officially read so much "great"and serious Literature that I am officially done. It has now turned into work--work I greatly enjoy doing, but I miss trashy fun stuff. Especially now that Harry Potter is all wrapped up. So I've made it my goal to start reading fun stuff instead of watching what passes for TV this summer. My new favorites? The Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyers and the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. Who knew I liked cheesy fantasy stuff so much? I haven't read anything so fun since I discovered VC Andrews in 7th grade.

So the Twilight series is worth it? I have put down the last two "just for fun" books in the middle of reading them: Phillippa Gregory's A Respectable Trade and Wicked. They just didn't do it for me and I hate to give up on a book that way.

I agree with Wicked-- too wordy to be fun for me. The Twilight Series is a teen series, so it's about kids, which might be a turn off. But the situation is interesting and the writing--for what it is--isn't half bad. It's no Harry Potter, but I'm looking forward to the 4th book coming out in August.

I couldn't get through a quarter of Wicked. Reading "trashy, fun stuff"--I call them "mind twinkies". Nothing wrong with that.

A timely tip for conference papers, as I'm currently (like right now) procrastinating about revising my paper for the England conference next week. It's already done, I know it could be better, but I just don't wanna do anything else to it right now. I'd like to take a break and just focus on preparing for the trip, you know?

Oh yeah, LOVE the "big boy" underwear over the diapers idea! Too cute :)

mind twinkies-- I love it. And the only reason I did get through (most) of Wicked was because I liked the musical so much, and I was waiting for the novel to get better.
