Dear, Dear Students

The title of the poem is The Waste Land. Not, as many of you seem to think, the Wasteland.

I've seen even published scholars (who were just making a glancing reference to Eliot) make that mistake! Why does everyone want to turn it into one word?

How's this for a boo-boo: I once heard a grad student pronounce "Shalott" (as in "The Lady of Shalott") to rhyme with "ballot." I'm allowed to make fun of him 'cuz he was kind of a jerk. ;)

Juicy, don't you know the Lady of Shallot was so named because she was highly skilled in the culinary arts?!?!
