Like teachers, like music, like everything--books are only one of many influences on kids. The greatest influence should be the parents and the way they've raised their kids for the 15 or 16 years before they ever pick up a dark YA fantasy. Teenagers are exploring life issues, and deciding the good and bad ways to solve problems, and the books they want to read explore them too--and often in thought-provoking ways. More damaging, to me, would have teens not read at all, and spend all their times in chat rooms and watching reality--or using our politicians as role models. LOL.
